Trion recently launched an Ascend-a-Friend program for its hit MMO, Rift. For those who have been hiding under a rock for the past couple of months and don’t know what Rift is, here’s a brief overview.Rift is a fantasy-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. It has two features that distinguish it from most other games in the genre: 1) a rather flexible class system that allows you to play multiple group roles (ie. tank, healer or damage dealer), depending on what’s needed at the moment, and 2) dynamic content in the form of rifts and invasions, which function mainly like Warhammer Online’s public quests. The game has been doing quite well since it launched in March but obviously, Trion wants more players to sign up, hence the new referral program. If you want to try the game out before buying it, currently the referral program is the only way to go as Trion does not offer a free trial through any other means. If you subsequently buy the game, you get three additional perks:
- You and the person who referred you can summon each other’s characters
- You and the person who referred you will automatically get the other’s characters on his/her friend list (not sure I’d consider this a perk)
- You will get an ingame title “The Chosen”
The recruiter’s incentives are threefold: an ingame Corgi named Courage, a rather flamboyant plumed hat, and a mighty-looking steed. It should be easy to find a referral key on the internet but since you’re reading my blog, you can also click on MY referral link here:

Sorry, no Mac version yet.
But you can still play it on your Mac! Come on Charles, you know you want to.
